The 2019 Honda Talon 1000X Is The High-Performance Sport Side-By-Side Honda That PEI's Been Waiting For

Nov. 19 2018 Product Updates By Centennial Auto-Sport & Tire

This is the 2019 Honda Talon 1000X. It is awesome. It is fearsome. It is imposing, intimidating, impressive, and impossibly capable.

Here are the key facts.

POWER

The 2019 Talon 1000X uses a performance-tuned 104-horsepower 999cc engine, a new four-valve parallel twin built upon years of experience with the Pioneer 1000 and Honda Africa Twin.  The 999cc engine is linked to a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission with two automatic modes (Drive and Sport) that the Talon's rider can override with paddle shifters.

Honda's I-4WD intelligently incorporates a low range mode and brake traction control to independently apply braking power for better traction. The Talon 1000X weighs 1,490 pounds, creating a weight-to-power ratio of 14.3 pounds per horsepower, slightly better than the Honda Civic Si.

SUSPENSION

The Talon 1000X uses Fox Podium Quick Switch 3 shocks with a double-wishbone front suspension and a 3-link rear. That creates rock-crawling suspension travel of 15.1 inches at the rear and 14.6 at the front. There's 12.7 inches of ground clearance, as well.

DIMENSIONS

Measuring 64 inches wide, the Talon 1000X is an inch wider than the Pioneer 1000, remaining narrow enough to tackle Island trails yet wide enough for stretch-out comfort for two. The Talon is 123.9 inches long with a wheels-at-the-corner 87.6 inch wheelbase. Stock wheels are 28x9-15 alloys on Maxxis tires at the front, 28x11-15s at the rear.  There's a big 27.6-litre fuel tank, and Honda says the cargo area can take 300 pounds.

FEATURES
Every Talon 1000X comes standard with a one-piece injection moulded roof. That's great. But Honda wisely shaped the roof air vents so that the Talon can face either direction on an open trailer.

Adjustable seating is helpful, so is  tilting steering column that tilts especially far forward to make for easier entry and exit. All Talons include hard doors with window netting. There's also LED lighting, raised areas so passengers can easily secure their feet, a passenger grab handle that can be quickly adjusted and locked into any position, and pass-throughs for 4-point harnesses.
